As a psychological coach with a relational approach, my coaching style is fluid and adaptable, unlike the traditional, structured, and goal-oriented methods. Traditional coaching often focuses solely on achieving specific tasks, overlooking the broader context and associated psychological and emotional needs of the client. While this can be effective for some task-oriented goals, it doesn't contribute significantly to the client's deeper understanding of self and overall learning and development needed to be successful as a leader. In contrast, a relational coach recognizes that achieving goals effectively often involves addressing underlying psychological and emotional needs. By being attuned to the client's gestures, patterns, body language, and emotions, a relational coach adapts their approach moment to moment, responding appropriately to the client's communications during coaching. This adaptability helps client address their psychological and emotional needs to bring in the deeper and long lasting change needed to successfully achieve their coaching objectives. During coaching conversations, I pay close attention to all the information provided by the client. This includes not only how a client is organising their experience verbally but also non-verbal cues and the broader context of the client's experience, such as systemic issues, gender disparities, and external pressures. Being fully present and responsive to the underlying factors, it helps me ask insightful questions. The insights created in such conversations activate different ways of knowing and making meaning of a client's situation. This complex and adaptive conversation helps clients deeply understand themselves and their responses, helping them give new meaning to their situation supporting their learning and development needed to be successful in their roles.
